I'm just curious, who all is a musician? what do you play, who are your inspirations, who would you say, or have people told you you sound like, and what kind of music?
I'm a singer/songwriter and I'm also learning to play the keyboard. I don't know how I'd describe my music, my earlier songs are more pop but lately since I've been listening to a lot of old school soul and gospel, my songs have taken on more of that. I'm sure there are some who would still consider them to be pop, but I'd like to think that I'm at least a little bit unique. my biggest inspiration right now is the queen of soul Aretha Franklin, I spend hours listening to her and just being inspired...words can't discribe. but, I promise I'm not here to ramble on about my admiration for the queen of soul...people tell me I sound like Joss Stone, but I really don't think so although it's a nice thought!! some people have said I sound like a young Janis Joplin, but I think that's a little too extreme although Janis is cool.
but, what about ya'll?
canadian diva
I sing, off key, buy I sing...
I play the guitar, and as inspirations go,
Maynard James Kenan fromTool, Stevey Wonder, aAron Lewis from Stained, Alicia Keys.
...Sorry it was sort of random,
Cortney
I am a singer-songwriter. I play the piano and a little bit of guitar. Some of my inspirations are Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, Incubus, Gavin DeGraw, Ben Jelen...etc.
I used to play the trumpet. I can kinda play it, and kinda the piano. But i never play anything now.
Hey. I'm a singer as well. Who do I sound like? i have no idea, I've been told different things by different people, but overall, not too many comparisons have been made. I can also pound away on a piano at times, though I'm not that great (I'd like to learn though). I play violin as well. My favourite genre of music, though I'd like to consider my flavour rather diverse--is broadway stuff, mostly. I also like some classical, some pop, and even light country...reggae can be cool too, I pretty much like anything except medal.

I'm a singer and I play a bit of piano, guitar, and percussion. I have so many inspirations for my musical style. This is gonna sound weird, but to the melodic power metal fans, it'll make sense. I want to take opera lessons so I can sing metal. And, if I play my cards right, if I don't have my own band at first, there's always that choir company who could stand to have a female singer to back up the five males there... though I don't know if I could even get one word out in front of one without fainting.
Well I dabble a bit in the vocals, and I'm hoping to get professional training like Matt Barlow x Iced Earth had, plus I do play a bit of guitar, and I'm gonna be getting lessons on that as well.
I sing mainly. I'm taking lessons right now from this 83-year-old former opera singer who's really good and has taught me a lot. I also play the harmonica and a little piano-keyboard. In fact, I've been told I'm a lot like Stevie Wonder only I'm white and a girl. I allways like learning new instruments, or at least trying them out. I got an Irish tin whistle for my birthday so I'll try and figure that out next.
hiya,
I play lead guitar for a metal/prog rock band called Changeling. I also write but strangely ... always the music before any lyrics. My inspirations are many and diverse for example early metallica and anthrax ... right through to more modern progressive bands such as Tiamat, dreadful shadows and in the woods...
I am not rich and famous, yet, but I am a musician, of sorts. I play the flute, the piano, I sing, can pick melodies out on the guitar, and I play the tin whistle.
I've perfect pitch, and I play by ear. I was self-taught at the flute for two years, took lessons for two more, and am back to teaching myself.
As for what I sound like, I've never really taken time to find out. Everyone that has heard my music say that I am quite good, but I haven't developed an opinion of that yet.
In the last five years, I have played in several competitions for the flute--Solo and Ensemble, and the Utah Flute Association--and have received Superior ratings every time I participated.
I also complse myt own works, many of which follow the example of Chopin, Mozart, and Bach. When composing, I allways keep my works in my head, and people say I sould record them, but I've not quite gotten around to it.
After I graduage, I intend on making an album or two, though how I'm going to do that I don't know.
Well, that's enough about me... what about the rest of you? Any advice? Suggestions? Commentws? Complaints on how long this post is? Well, it's done now.
Bobbi
I also am one. I helped a lot my brother with his academy he had founded in Colombia. I had to go and tune his guitar! that was quite funny. I am doing my best to train my ears, although I can hear a song and tell you every tone, as I did with my brother! yai! he is coming soon and the music talent will be again!
I also play some piano songs, as well as violin. Ok... but unfortunately my singing studios or classes were interupted by a stupid teacher. "HE'LL LEARN!!!!" sorry for my tone. He is just aperson who thinks blind is handycapped
Hi Guys,
I'm a musician too. I love to sing, am in the school choir and a choir outside of school that gets to tour and make CD's, woohoo! Anyway, I play a bit of piano, took lessons for a few years. I don't like structured piano lessons, though, I love to play what I feel like playing. Also can't read braille music very well lol. Um, what else? Oh yeah. Like Lou, I have perfect pitch so that's fun to tease my fellow chorusters with. I tease, "You're in the wrong key by a halfstep ..." lol it's fun. My inspiration is Vanessa Carlton, the singer/songwriter/pianist. She rules, and her new album, Harmonium, is coming out November ninth! Yes! Okay I think that's it? ... Yep. Oh and someday I hope to have an album heehe. Oh and I took one year of voice lessons but my teacher who I loved moved away, so now I'm going to find a new one! And I have no clue who I sound like. Some say I sound like an angel, ahhaa as if. Teehee.
Bye.
Caitlin
i can't consider myself as a musician, because i'm not at that stage yat. i do play piano and keyboare. i used to bee a keyboardis for my church.
Hey yall. I have played piano all my life and play by ear, (sorry, don't plan on reading braille music.) Just curious, how many of yall actually read music in braille or notate music so that other musicians know exactly what you want played? And, I also sing, some of my inspirations are Joe Diffie, Clay Davidson, and Brooks and Dunn. I also want to learn to play lead guitar, but don't know if I will. The piano is good enough right now. Also I play the keyboard.
Take care.
Hi all,
I am not a musician, although one day I hope to learn to play piano and guitar and also make use of that harmonica my grandparents gave me.
Let me tell every single one of you, from personal experience and personal knowledge, the Music Man is an awesome singer and pianoist (hmmm is that the right word?) and such!!! Amazing gift from God, his musical talent is. SSo, if one day, you hear him on the radio, don't be to terribly surprised, okay?
I'm outta here.
God Bless,
Take Care,
Dixie
i play guitar violin piano and harmonica
blame Bob Dylan for that 1 .smile
I also read music its essential if you want to succeed in this game.
I sing, and I sing a *lot*. I used to play the piano, but I gave that up when I started grade 9... I need to pick it up again some day. Oh yeah, I kinda play the didgeridoo, too. And I don't read braille music, I prefer my memory. Besides, if i'm a pianist, it's kinda hard to read as you play... well, totally impossible actually.

I play drums, guitar, keyboards am I can even be spotted doing bcking vocals if either I'm intoxicated or have the Atairs vocal processors (Cher, Eiffel 65 e.g.). I write songs as well. Me and a friend have been working on our first album for awhile and it's going very slowly due to frustration with computers and software and such, but hopefully it will be completed by the fall. As a guitarist I'm most influenced by Bernard Butler (formerly of Suede), also Ed from Radiohead (his sound scapes are beautiful) Johnny from Radiohead (a mad guitarist) and Bill Corgan. As a drummer I'm awed by Jimmy Chambarlaine (of smashing Pumpkins) and the Tool drummer (whatever his name is). I try to be a jack of all traits and master of none, do play guitar and drums pretty well though and had 8 years of classical piano training which amounted to a little bit, perhaps not that much. :) OH, another big influence would be John Fruscanti of Red Hot Chilli Peppers, the way this guy plays guitar is truly mind blowing. I'm not much into fast technical solos, I appreciate them but feel they're very unoriginal and bring nothing new to the table, still folks like Slash and Kirk Hammett are very "cool" and very tallented. :)
Hi all,
I believe it was Goblin who said that reading Braille music is essential. And not even being a musician, I can tell you that it ain't. Those who can play by ear, like friends of mine and my boyfriend, don't need Braille music and would probably be hindered by using it.
Take Care,

I am a singer/songwriter. Singing is my passion.
I've been singing since I was in diapers. Both my parents were musicians.
In fact my mom was playing the night she went into labor with me LOL. She told my dad and they finished the show even though she was having contractons LOL! When I heard the story, I thought it was the funniest thing ever.
I am an only child, and I developed my talent very early. I've never had voice lessons.
When I performed for my cousins at a party they told me I sound like Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey, and I have some soul in me too LOL.
I can not play any instruments, but my voice is an instrument LOL. I think anyway.
If any of you want to hear me sing, I am singing in my audio profile, and I am making clips always singing cover songs LOL.
OK well take care all and God Bless.

I forgot to tell you who my inspirations are. There is a big list.
Christina Aguilera: She has the most amazing voice. She has so much passion in her voice. If you listen to her cd Stripped, she wrote almost all of the songs on there. She is truely gifted.
Alicia Keys: Like Christina, she is great, I loved the hook up between her and christina on Impossible.
Whitney Houston: I loved her older music, like greatest love of all, If you say my eyes are beautiful etc. She is a great singer. I hear her a little in Christina and Alicia.
Joss Stone: She is a new singer, but her voice is AMAZING. It's deep and powerful.
Andrea Bocelli: yes he is opera, but his voice is powerful. He sings with such passion that it brings tears to my eyes. He has a gift that is very rare to find these days.
Leann Rimes: She is amazing. There is something about her voice that gets to me. Her song Looking Thru Your Eyes, is one of my favorites.
and there are many more that inspire me but not enough space to write them all LOL, so if ya want to know more let me know.
umm i am a "shower singer". lol. i play some piano, violin (when i want to) IM PRETTY MUCH JUST A LISTener. My inspirations are Jessica simpson, Paris Hilton (I know shes not a singer but she should be) and umm Luther vandross, and Jamie cullum.
hey there, I am a singer.
I am a singer/songwriter, i play the piano, but mainly i play keyboards, i do dabble a bit in guitar but am not very good at that - mainly a keyboard player, and record all my songs in cakewalk on to the pc. dunnow if they're any good, although some have told me they are.
Wow, we do have a lot! We should make a CD, all of us. Called, "Now, That's What I Call Zone!" Hehehe jkjkjkjk!
Caitlin
I play the flute, piano, and I sing. My biggest inspirations are Natalie Grant, Aritha Franklin Mariah Carey, and other people.
OOh Israeli! I love flute, very cool! Can you play flute and piano and sing together, at the same time? Lol jk. You could play piano with your teeth and blow the flute with yoru nose and sing through your mouth. Sorry, I'm really hyper today! And that made me giggle...
Caitlin

lmao!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that was a good one lol
Hey CD. I've been writing my own music now since my senior year of high school, and now it seems to be wearing off. I mean, I still write, but I find that I do it now out of boredom, and I've only written a total of about three songs this year. My attemps towards making a releasable CD have changed, and I doubt that I'll have a releasable one anytime soon. Anyway, I play the piano, guitar, flute, clarinette, saxophone, and other small things. c ya!

hi ive been playing guitar for a year 3 months and 28 days. ive been singing my whole life, but i have no professional lessons; it just came kinda naturally, i guess. in fourth grade after my bf michael dumped me bc guys were makin funna him cuz he had a blind unpopular gf (second time), and he liked another girl, i wrote a song. then i was quiet until 6th grade or so, and i felt i was being called by god 2 use my musical talents 2 glorify his beautiful name. so ive been writing christian songs ever since. i sing in my school choir (boring, hate it). im an alto, and i can sing tennor, i prefer no second soprano but if i must i can sing it, and if i sing soprano my voice crax like a guys.. its freaking hilarious! now as 4 reading music i dunno anything about it cept a little bit o counting. i really think that brl music would slow me down. anyway, in choir i have this little system where theyll write d for do, r for re, m for me... the list goes on. and for rhythms i just listen 2 everyone else and do what they do. another thing about brl music is, how can u play guitar and read it!?!?!?!??!?! i mean come on lol... anyway if its what god calls me to do i hope to be in a christian hardcore band when i get good enough. god bless-- mel...xox
Hi Melmel, gosh I wanna hear you sing, you gotta make a recordin' and send it to me heheh! And yeah, for awhile I didn't want voice lessons because singing just came naturally and i didn't wanna mess them up, but they're fun heheh, at least with the teacher I had before she moved. SO yeah.
Caitlin
And Heather glad you liked my little joke hehehe.
Happy new year all!
Caitlin
Yeah Goblin fellow harmonica player. I think we're the only two on here with all the guitarists and pianinsts and singers.
And here's an update. When I was in Ireland I learned to play the spoons from some guy in a pub. They're pretty fun and I jammed a lot at guide dog school with this other girl who had a fiddle.
I sing, I'm in a choir, and I play the drumbs. alison
lol krism thats awesome! how dyou play spoons? ok now im interested lol... and alison, drums rock man! i hope 2 learn 2 play them someday...
Heheh Krisme, I know Joeweakland plays harmonica too. i think? Check out his audio profile. Lol.. And I can kind of play the spoons. I learned at chorus camp. It's really fun!
Caitlin
Cool. I have this pair of woodeb spoons that are kinda glued together so I'm kind of cheating but you hold them in one hand and whack them against the other with the beat of the music.
I'm a keyboard player, but I also can play bass, and I dabble in guitar. Also, I can sing any lead, and any harmony part, and I have a small recording studio that I use to give my friends good-quality cd's.
anyways... as I said in post, 12 or something, I play piano, but am lately playing keyboard and well I need someone experienced in midi since I have a lot of questions about it. I know what midi is, so don{t worry about telling me its definition lol, but I need to know how to get the most out of cakewalk and sonar! any help, plz?
also I need to know where to find .sty files, or styles on the internet...... thx
Instrument definitions are the key!
i'm a classical accordionist. i also play piano and sing. I'm in my 3rd year at university doing a music degree and wanna represent the UK at the world accordion championships next year in China.
oh, and on the subject of braille music, I also have perfect pitch and do read a bit of braille music. However, it's a pain in the ass for reading more than one line of music so i rely on my ear for anything that isn't choral music.
wooo, this topic is still goin' strong!! haha that's awesome. very interesting replies...the spoons? wow. lol that's cool!!
haha yes...I love it!! "now that's what I call zone!" lol. we should make a new one every year and have like volume 1, 2, 3 and so on!!! hehehe. I wonder how many copies we'd sell?
and woo, another person who has Aretha as their inspiration, yay lol
canadian diva
I'm a singer, self taught piano so don't hold it against me. picked up a guitar bout 7 years ago. I'm influenced far to easily so won't list it all here. I've an audio profile if your really interested to hear my stuff.
Yep I play the drums. I am a bit crazy though with the drums. I got 8 symbols and still adding. I am yet another musician on the zone. I also can play base, guitar, and the trumpet
Well, I am a singer, too. That means - I love singing, I sing in a choir, but I wish I had the oportunity to take singing lessons on my own. I love singing.
well, i play keyboard, and i really play all sorts of stuff, i have keyboard lessons for 4 years now, this will be my 5th year.
Well, since you guys asked? I am a singer, and have been singing for about 12 years, and believe me, I enjoy it alot. I also right songs, and went all the way to the Hollywood round of American Idol. Unfortunately, I did not get shown on tv. Anyway, for those people with sonar and cake talking for sonar, I am very very jealous of you guys, I want that so bad and don't have the money to get it. Well, anyway, someone who wants to be nice can give me it. Lol. Anyway, some of my inspirations include, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Christina Aguilera, Martina McBride, Kelly Clarkson, Hilary duff, and many more. By the way if you guys want me to do a song for you let me know, and if I don't know it, I will learn it. Thanks!
ok, so I'm a broadway/choral geek. I made the Connecticut Western Regional choir last year and this year and I also made all/state choir last year. I sing in my school's select choir and I am a tennor. I want to become a choral director so I'll major in music ed once high school is done (but that's in a couple more years.)
heya all. I'm a Singer songwriter. I'm a soprano when i'm singing in a choir and I used to sing in the Blue mountains union singers.
I write all sorts of stuff, but a lot of it is political. I can't help it, the world needs it.
I play the Autoharp and i'm just about to release my first cd. Yay for me.
My inspirations are Pete seeger, James Keelaghan, Gilian Welsh and Johnny Cash.
Well, i'm not too sure who I sound like...if I had to choose...hmmm i'm not sure.you should ask Puggle or resonant for that one.
I like to sing folk, bluegrass and a little country.
well, that's me.
byee.
Hey everyone, this is Iris and I came across this thread when I was browsing the music board. Well, I play the guitar, piano, keyboards, and recorder. I also sing, and I've recently been accepted into All-State Choir. I also write a lot of songs--some pop, some Christian. My biggest inspiration, though, is my music teacher Ms. Gallup. She's really helped me to refine my voice and has given me confidence. Also, even though I don't like the example she sets, Mariah Carey is also one of the people that I somewhat look up to--vocally, that is. I think that for a person as educated as she is about vocal health, she's really made a mess of her voice, but I'd still like to discover my full vocal range by extending the whistle register--squeaky high thing.
I play guitar, bass, piano, and drum set. I love playing guitar solos and I am very good, or so I've been told... Currently working on my second solo album. I am also a vocalist, sound engineer, and producer. My music, both original and cover material, ranges from really heavy and complex, like steve vai meets dream theater meets vinnie moore, to new age solo piano stuff that you might hear in a film score etc. I am all over the map really which can be a drag sometimes! For more info and to hear clips, as well as to purchase my album, please go to www.cameronstrife.com End of shameless self promotion! Ha!
Gotta add my 4/5 strings here. I have been a bass player for over 20 years working professionally in studios, producing music and traveled over seas a bit. Of course I also needed to pay the bills so now I work as a computer instructor/tech support person. I primarily play a Steinberger 4 and 5 string bass through a GK 150 wat combo that was modified and now contains an EV speaker which works well. I can pretty much play any style but prefer Funk/R&B with some pop. Influences: Level42, Earth Wind and Fire, Steely Dan, Patrice Ruscian(probably spelled that wrong), Tod Rundgren, Kenny Latimore,(Hmmm, when should I stop typing?), Michael Mcdonald and others. Always Loving that Funk&Groove for sure...
Wow! what a long thread this is! I'm primarilly a keyboard player, although I've dabbled in lots of things. I have a regular church gig, and freelance.
I've been fortunate over the years to have done some session work and some commercials. Did a couple film scores for our local Science Center in Baltimore. I write occasionally now, but used to do writing for a small production studio. Bult their music library. Have cassettes of rough mixes of the stuff to give you an idea how long ago that was. Concerning Braille music, I use it some. I have perfect pitch, but if there's a tune I dont' know, I'll write out the melody from listening to it, and harmonize it myself. Many of the hymnal arrangements I've seen are pretty lame, and there just isn't any passion in them. I walk a fine line between sounding what I call "worshipful" and overly performance-oriented with christian music. Influences? I listen to about everything, but I really like a keyboardist/producer named David Foster. He can write just about any kind of music.
yes, yes, lovin' the replies. this is awesome, I was surprised to see my topic at the top of the list, lol. Re David Foster...did anyone see him on american idol the other week? he's someone I'd like to work with, he's worked with so many great musicians and written so many hits! lovin' the replies, keep 'em comin'.
Well, that's almost enough to get me to watch American Idle lol. I've got lots of his albums, and stuff he's done with other people. I love Christmas music, and his Christmas album is one of my favorites because of the variety of poeple he has on it. A friend of mine has seen videos of him, and they tell me he's lefthanded. Would your apreciation of him have anything to do with the fact that he's Canadian? lol. Oh, he did a CD with "Oh Canada." Heard it once, and it was awesome!
lol. no, my appreciation of him partly is because he wrote "I have nothing," which is one of my favourite Whitney songs. and that he's canadian lol..of course..gotta love a canadian who has done so much for the music industry. he's just awesome.
I am a music education major at the Crane School of Music, with a concintration in voice, although I am most concerned with general music education rather than vocal music education. I am either a mezzo soprano or a contralto. My private lesson teacher and studio voice professor, Dr. Debra Massell and I are in the process of figuring that out. I have enough passable upper range to sing soprano two or even on some pieces soprano one in a choir, but my solo voice works best on pieces written for mezzo sopranos at this point in my vocal development. I sing alto two in Phoenix Club and also in Crane Chorus. I have sung Alto one and two and soprano one and two in various choirs over the years, although the soprano one lines were my favorite and the soprano two register was the most comfortable, for me, up until very recently. I have also sung some tenor one and a very few tenor two parts in a few choruses. I am not a performance quality vocalist, but I am quite good none the less and I really enjoy singing. I can play the piano, clarinet, cello and mountain dolcimor a bit. I will be taking keyboard skills for electric pianos and keyboards and for concert pianos next semester at Crane. I will be, in the very near future, taking trumpet lessons from my friend Matthew to help me ahead of time with my upcoming brass methods classes at Crane. I am also taking guitar lessons from my friend Cameron, as guitar would be agreat ensemble demonstration and leading instrument for working with young children and general music classes during my student teaching and in my eventual career as a music educator. Next semester my friend Amy will be helping me brush up on my clarinet playing and possibly will help me take up the flute or the recorder, to prepare me for woodwind methods classes. My friend Jeffrey may also help me with my piano skills to supplement the keyboarding class I am required to take. I sing primarily opera arias, art songs, Broadway music and show tunes, as well as auritorios and on occasion some pop, rock, country, gospil, soul and jazz music. I have a passion for music, but my truest passion is for helping to introduce young children to music, that they might develop into well-rounded individuals who appreciate everything from Mozart to Ella Fitsgerald, to the Beatles, to Lenard Bernstein to Billy Joal to David Arkenstone to John Cage to Jimmy Hendrix, and so on and so on. I believe that any true vocalist, no matter what style of music they choose to sing, must have some measure of formal vocal training. I also believe that Braille music is very important. Certainly there are cases in which it is not particularly helpful or even when it can be a hinderence, but there are also cases in which it proves to be invaluable. Just as sighted children must learn to read and utalize print music, so should blind children learn to use Braille music. It is better to have a gunn and not need one, then it is to need a gun and not have one. This is true of having a spacific skill as well.
I used to play electric guitar, because I studied music for a bit, I still play occasionally but hardly ever because of uni work and other interests, and I also play a bit of piano, but the guitar was always my main instrument.
My main instrument is the accordion but i can also play the piano, a bit of drums and percussion.
I play the accordion for long time but i never practice for long hours. I only played with friends, or in restaurants in Cyprus with other musicians etc.
I mainly play Greek songs on the accordion but the last 4 years i started composing instrumental music as well.
I can only compose with midi. I try different things untill i come up with something i like. If i don't record it as soon as i think about it i forget it very quickly.
I think i would be better if i practiced more. Sometimes i feel as my head and my fingers don't work together lol. I might have an idea but i can't play it easily.
I also sing but my voice is very unstable. One day could be good and the next day terrible. It deppents how i feel, how nervous i am and what song i am singing. I didn't have any singing lessons.
I've been playing keyboards and singing most of my life. Not professionally trained, but I've been in a couple of local bands. My influences cover a broad range of artists, lots of blues and classic rock, early 90's grunge and alternative, even some country. I've been listening to a lot of Black Sabbath lately. One or two people have told me I sound like Eddy Vedder, though not sure how that works.
I've played the violin in several orchestras over the course of five years, maybe more. I also play the piano, and the recorder. never sing but to myself in my room when noone else is around People who inspire me: Joshua Bell, Lucia Micarelli, and Anne Sophie Mutter
As for braille music, I honestly wish I'd paid more attention to it. As I said in my first ost on this topic, I use it now and am extremely glad I can do what I can do with it, but wish I could do more. Recorder is great fun. I tend to do what I call "irreverent" music, in that I'll play things on instruments that weren't written for them. Sousa marches on recorders or Scott Joplin on harpsichord for example.
Lou
When i posted some months ago I neglected to mention my influences. I have three sorts. People who I love for their songs, that is because their music, instrumentally or lyrically speaks to me and to others. I want to be like them in that I want to sing, play or write music that has the same effect on others that their music has on me, or to help kids to appreciate a wide variety of music so that as teens and adults they can find and gather the meaning from such inspirational songs. Examples, John Denver, It's About Time, I want To Live and Rocky Mountain High. Bet Middler's The Rose. Yanni's One Man's Dream and Until The Last Moment. Billy Joal's Lenengrad, Paris Island, We Didn't Start The Fire, and Down Easter Alecksa. Please Don't Take The Girl, If You Get There Before I Do, This One's For The Girls, Jesus Take The Wheel, Love Lift Us Up, Celene Deon's Because You Loved Me and Love Doesn't Ask Why. I Hope You Dance, When You Walk Through a Storm, Marria Carry's There Can Be Miricles and Sweet Liberty from the musical Jayne Eyre. There are so many more, but if I listed all that I could think of this post would take up several edit fields worth of space. The second kind are musicians and composers who's music is simply of great quality and or virtuosity. For example, Mozart, Wagner, Billy Joal, Yanni, George Winston, Andrea Bocelli, John Cage, The King's Singers, Stevi Ray Vaun, Bach, etc. The third sort are musicians I have actually met or worked with who have enspired me. Dr. Bradey Alred, Dr. Carol Alred, Patricia Alexander, Rene Flemming, Dr. Debra Massell, Mathew Korn, Dr. Robert Bro, Secile Saine and others.
If you can sing a good "the rose," then you will be a damn good singer, not just some opera-trained singer that sounds one dimensional, even though you may not be.
I've also recently picked up the penny whistle.
I play the electric guitar and acoustic guitar. I also play drums and concussions. My main inspirations are the member of Godsmack I love their music and went to their concert last september. I own a gibson Les Paul with a picture of Bob Marley on the headstock and the body. I also just bought myself an Ibanez, and own a 5 piece Mapex Pro M series dark green drum kit. We all have our own unique sound so I don't really sound like anyone. I'm looking for a band and/or guys to jam with. Rock/acoustic/and some metal I'm into as well as classical like the Eagles, Glen Fry, etc.
I think the word you meant to put in there was percussion.
I done that on purpose...
I play keys, drumbs and tenor sax
I started playing keyboard/piano when I was four, I also started a variety of guitar types later on... and I'm now getting into bow instruments on top of it all. (Saving up for a cello!). I've attempted drums and some wind instruments, but they weren't entirely my thing. I'd also like to get into synthesizers and I wouldn't mind attempting the theremine or something like it.
I self taught myself, and play by ear... I regret not looking into reading music though, but I guess it's never too late to learn.
As for inspirations? There's no way I could make a list because I've found inspiration in, (and will probably continue to find inspiration in) practically everything. I really believe there's something useful or interesting in every genre, style, artist, band, etc, let alone just natural non-music sounds. I've taken lessons from different musicians for this same reason, -- every musician will have something different to show you.
My most commonly used "sound" though, people call it melodic metal/classical metal... and I like the eerie or melancholie aura that pops up in the songs I put together.
Is there a name for a certain type of synthesizer that can make it seem like there is more than one person singing? Josh Groban used one at his concert. When he sang, his voice was made to sound like it had been recorded singing several different parts, but really, it was just one person. kind of difficult to explain.
was pretty good at the flute when i was at school, also play guitar and a little keyboard.
To post 76, one can't be sure what was used. He might have actually recorded the back-up vocals, and they were on a computer backstage somewhere. It is possible to use devices for realtime harmony. Perhaps the recording engineers can give more insight into this than I can.

I had a keyboard, ... a long time ago, that had something on it called, I think, a vocoder. What that did is make copies of your voice, and if you held a chord down, say in the right hand, and sang into a mike that was plugged into the keyboard, you'd get harmonies. Crap explanation sorry, but that was possible a good few years ago, like in the 90's, so god only knows what's available to do that now.
Hi, I play drums and guitar. I sing mostly country but like rock as well. alabama, george strait Buck Owens, and ronnie Milsap gave me lots of inspiration, but mostly from my friends who took me out to sing.!! Music rules!!!
I have played the piano since first grade. I took lessons until sixth grade, at which time I quit for a variety of reasons. Although I have perfect pitch and am naturally gifted at music (I apologize if I sound like I am bragging, which is not my intent), after awhile it seemed to me that my piano-playing ability was all for whihch I was known and was almost the first thing that strangers who knew certain members of my family would mention whenever they would meet me for the first time. In addition, my piano teacher was having me play classical music almost exclusively and, although I enjoy classical music and believe that it provides a strong foundation for playing in other genres, I would like to have played a wider variety of music. For awhile after quitting lessons, I felt that a huge burden had been lifted and felt free to focus on developing other areas of my life. I did not touch the piano for a long time and still do not play very often because of time constraints and because I haven't made the effort to learn to play new styles of music, although I did play in a friend's wedding several years ago. Over time, I have thought about playing other styles of music, especially jazz piano (I am considering joining the jazz band or at least learning to play jazz pieces once I enter college this fall). I know that I have the talent for piano and do not want to continue wasting it, but would like to make playing the piano enjoyable and not a chore as it was in the past.
I think that explanation sounds about right. from what my dad could see, there was a keyboard he was playing as he sang.
way cool. and to the country guy, Brent Mason also rocks. He's an awesome guitarist. I'd love to do some of his licks. Other than the simple ones I can do that is.
I'm a singer and a songwriter, but I've never put out any of my music. I did a CD with my best friend two summers ago, and that was the most fun time in my life. I'll never forget singing a cover of Hotel Paper by Michelle Branch with him. People say I sound a little like Sarah Brightman when I want to, Avril, and I'm not quite sure who else. My inspirations are Tori Amos, Sarah McLocklan, Sarah Brightman, Alicia Keys, my best friend, John Ledgend, Idena Manzelle, and many others. I sing broadway, pop, opera, coral music, and this year is my first year in our school's advanced choirs. I also love singing Celtic music, and my other inspiration is Celtic Woman.
I took piano lessons for a couple of years, but quit because I decided it wasn't what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, which my parents didn't appreciate. I still like to play, but I prefer electronic keyboards to just a piano, and I tend to like to make things up with my limitted skills. Guess at this point my ears far surpass my chops, so to speak, but I have dreams of having some kind of keyboard and a nice little multi-track recorder so I can layer and orchestrate myself.
I'd like one of those too, but it'll have to wait until after school.
Hi
I play piano but I'm not that good. I also sing and have been having my voice trained for the past year. I'm told I'm good at that.
Christina
I'm a saxophone guy, and I have been at it for a long, long time. I was one of those kids who blew or pounded on several instruments including drums, piano and trumpet, and finally found one that didn't make the dog howl or cause loved ones to clap their hands over their ears in pain. I love to play jazz, and really get a lot of inspiration from the sax greats like Coltrane and Cannonball, but I have been with a soul and R&B band for the past ten years or so, and when I'm called up for studio work, it's usually a funk or contemporary jazz project. Total musical bliss for me would be playing traditional (bee-bop) jazz all night long until my chops just couldn't take it any more.
Well one more here! I'm a professional classical pianist and music is everything for me! I'm not closed on classical music, far from that, I love make different things! I make solo recitals, with normal reportoire for piano, concertos with orchestras last times with Grieg Concerto for Piano and reggularly recordings for our brodcasts! I also acompeign pop singers so I love make arrangements: normally they send me the melodies and I make the harmonies and arrangements! I studied in France but now i'm planning to study more, we will see where!!! My influences are Bach (The sun of the music) and I can say you that more than a half of my life is spent on playing Bach! I also like play spanish music as Albeniz and Granados and of course german reportoire Schumann, Beethoven etc! French music for piano also have a special part of my heart and I spent many time playing Debussy and Ravel but actually I'm not working on it! And yes I read braille scores. Making as a work what we love and always dreammed to do, is one of best gifts that life can give us so I would like say you: do everything for achieving your dreams! Limit is a word that music doesn't know! Smiles
I play piano and write my own music. don't know what category it would be in.
I play guitar (both electric and acoustic), and a little bass and trumpet. My main passion is the electric guitar though. I mostly play for myself and loved ones, but I've done a few performances here and there. My influences are varied, anything from Dimeback Deryl from Pantera, to Mark Kozelek of Red House Painters fame.
Music is my life, and I always either have it on, or in my head or am thinking about it. I've been into it ever since I can remember. I sang ever since I was a child. When I was in elementary school, I used to perform in the chorus and did a few solos. I also played the piano/keyboard during that time, though strictly by ear. I now have a bouzouki (like a guitar and a baglama (like a mini bouzouki) and am teaching myself how to play. It's not easy, because I want to learn the dromoi (scales) but I love it and maybe if I got up and actually practised every once in awhile that would help! Maybe, if I ever get really good, I can perform in a taverna. But I've always loved and am always practising drumming, so my boyfriend got me a toubeleki (a sort of hand drum), through a friend and I'm waiting to see him so that he could give it to me. I also have an acoustic guitar that I wouldn't mind learning someday and an electric that I wouldn't mind selling, since I'll never play it. lol
Hey1 It's gods Amazing love! i play the pianoand I sing. I've been playing the piano since age 3 and sang since age 5. I like the older jazz like: tony Bennet, Natalie coal and I also love Andrea boceli and Luciano Pavaroti. They are just amazing!
Hi there.
I'm a drummer, a guitarist and just starting to get back on the keyboard.
at present, i have 2 drum kits, 3 guitars and 1 keyboard.
As for influences? well there's a hell of a lot of them that influence me, but i'll give a few examples. on the drums especially. The Who, Led Zeppelin, Rush, Genesis, Spock's Beard, Dream Theata, Van-halen, mostly classic rock and prog rock - metal bands mostly. If you want to know about the music that influences me, check out my myspace page which you will locate on my profile. As for what i sound like? well to be honest, i don't want to be big headed, so i'll say nothing. 1 of you has hurd me play all ready. i'm also hoping to pick up the bass aswell in the future, but time will tell.
Out of the 3 musical tallents, i think drums are by far the best. A challenging, but the thrill is far much better than sex lol. Or what ever that's like. any way. i'd be off, so speak later.
Hey everyone.
I am also a musician--I play piano, I used to play the violin, and I play flute and I also sing. Who are my inspirations? I don't think I have any. When I sing, some people say that I sound like Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood.
Oh and did I also mention that I have perfect pitch?
I have perfect pitch as well, and to me, it's a curse. YOu hear a note in everyday things that don't even involve music at all. I also had this nasty habit of correcting people in orchestra when they played, for example, an E natural that was supposed to be an E flat. Grrrrrrr! that irked me so much.
I'm guessing that got on a lot of people's nerves!!! Lol.
oh hell yeah. lol
I can remember going to parties when I was younger and hating listening to the keyboard layers, because I knew I could do the job better than they wre. The perfect pitch has been a blessing as a curse as the last two posters have indicated. I couldn't have worked as a studio musician, and done my church job as easily without it. I've learned to disconnect myself from it to a point, because it made listening to music not as pleasureable.
Lou
Ah, I have had the same feeling. Lol.
I am singing in a Musicgroup, If you hear my audio-profile, you will hear it. If you want to have more, just write me a private mail.
Well, I can't say I'm a musician, cause I'm still learning. But I play the bouzouki (like a guitar), the baglama (a minny bouzouki) and the toumbeleki (a hand drum). All are Greek instruments. I have no teacher for the first two (the second is a matter of practise) which makes things difficult, and I don't study as much as I should, but yeah. Maybe, someday, if I get my act together, I'll be able to learn enough to perform in a taverna. I adore music. It's just that I'm usually more of a listener than a player.
Hmmm. lets see, Guitar, drums, a little piano, bass, tried trumpet, but hated it, that's pretty much it for me.
Woops. forgot to edit. the list was inspirations. lol.
Well, I play keyboard/piano. i've only been playing for 1 year and six months. A lot of people tell me that I'm good, and that it sounds like I've been playing longer, which is cool. I've tried trumpet. I had to stop though because I have braces, and the mouth peace vibrating off them hurt, and it was hard to play with them on. Next year I should be starting sax. i started playing drums, but i've stopped and have stuck to piano. I absolutely love playing piano. I feel that my style on piano is latin and jazz. I also sing too. I sing a lot of spanish stuff but I can also sing English stuff too. I sing R&B. Some of my influences are:
<UL>
<LI>Ken-Y from Rakim y ken-y,
<LI>Frankie J,
<LI>Notch,
<LI>Zion,
<LI>Marcus Houston,
<LI>Usher,
<LI>Sammie,
<LI>Tony Dize
</UL>
and that's all i can think of right now. My brother and I are like the only musicians in my family. He just recently started. But he keeps switching instruments. He is pllaying sax now, but before he was trumpet, then before that was french horn, then before then trumbone and then before that was a baratone. So yeah, hopefully he stays with sax. He just started this year, so yeah, he's not that good.
Way to screw up the HTML. Erm!!!
Well, I'm a multi-instrumentalest, playing the drums, bass guitar, guitar, and keys. I also sing in A bruice dickonson style, or more like deo and howard jones.
my guitar inspirations would have to be jimmy page, dimebag darel of pantera, and tom morello of rage against the machine. plus, my other ones would be jeff healey, eric clapton, and b.b. king.
drummers: neal peart, John bonnum, vinny paul, and the guy from heart. Mike portnoi is also up there.
I just play bass and keys, I really don't have anyone who's influenced my playing style.
I sing, and I just started playing the guitar about 6 months ago. It's about the only instrument that really held my interest. I played the piano for something like 10 years, and I can also play drums to a certain extent, though I haven't really done that since I was about 12. I have a lot of influences/inspirations, mostly rock singers like Aaron Lewis, Scooter Ward from Cold, and Kurt Cobain. Kurt Cobain especially, he's my inspiration as far as guitar goes. I'm learning to play a lot of Nirvana songs, and in general he was cool. It was a shame he died so young. But my biggest inspiration of all time is Amy Lee from Evanescence. I'm in the choir at my school, and before I have a big concert, I always sing to one of her songs to warm up. She's so talented and she has such a beautiful voice. I would love to sound like her. I haven't ever been told I sound like anybody, though, and I wouldn't want to. I want to have a unique sound.
I just started playing the guitar... heeheehhee I'm gettin so damn good at it. My besty says I'm a natural, and he's the one who got me the guitar for my birthday.
